pig bladder for holding artist paints
Posted by Cynthia Denney on Mar 27th 2024
I am a docent at an art museum and love to use hands on materials with my kids on tours. As you know, artists need to store their handmade paints and keep them from drying out. They (somehow) discovered pig bladders perfect for the job. I thought that showing students and visitors, they would see what their favorite 1800's artists were using.
The thing is, I did not realize that it would be so big.
Question? Can I form this in the shape of a small pouch and tie it with a string? Will it dry out and rot or remain pliable--that might be better because you could handle it. If the visitors could handle it I would buy another. What a story they would go home and tell. -
How artists used pig bladders

I use this as a demonstrations to show students how the invention of the metal paint tube was so important to replace the pig bladder. I get lots of ewww's but they listen.

It was well kept but there was a little bit of random hair on it which I thought was sort of odd because a pig doesn't have hair
